Our Editor, Welshman Phil Parry, almost became used to the abuse hurled at him during 43 years in journalism, but he is still shocked by the Argentine President Javier Milei calling journalists “HUMAN SHIT”, after they uncovered alleged corruption in his controversial regime, and it is NOT funny…
The phrase ‘don’t shoot the messenger’ springs to mind!
It seems clear that those in power do not like investigative outlets (such as The Eye).
The Argentinian president, Javier Milei, is facing his lowest approval ratings since taking office in 2023, as newly published evidence allegedly revealed a $5 million financial agreement connected to his public endorsement last year of a controversial crypto project.
It seems there was a financial agreement, revealed by the Argentinian investigative outlet El Destape, which apparently contradicts Mr Milei’s claim that he “obviously” had no connection to it.
The scandal has tarnished his reputation among voters, as he seeks re-election next year, when they will elect the President and Vice-President, members in the Chamber of Deputies and Senate, as well as the governors of most provinces.
During a speech at the Council of the Americas (CA), his criticism of the media was scathing, referring to “corrupt, lying, bribed journalists, hitmen with microphones”, “intellectually deficient beings”, “apes with microphones”, “fools”, and “journalistic trash”.
He accused nearly all media outlets of working ‘to bring down his government’.
In January the Committee to Protect Journaists (CPJ) proclaimed: “Last year, FOPEA (Foro de Periodismo Argentino) reported that Milei was connected to 43% of attacks (on journalists) in the form of stigmatizing discourse, offenses and insults”.
The campaigning group PEN International has warned: “Journalists, PEN members, photographers, and activists covering events at judicial venues find it increasingly difficult to do their jobs free from persecution. During peaceful protests, they have been subjected to physical aggression — including being pepper-sprayed, tear-gassed, and hit with rubber bullets in the body and face — and routinely detained. Dozens of journalists have been injured.
I find this kind of attitude appalling, but also baffling, when journalists are only doing their jobs, and it puts me in mind of all the insults thrown at me over the years, by people who apparently do not like the facts being brought out about them.
During the many miscarriage of justice investigations I have undertaken, I found this approach perplexing.
It is almost as if the family and friends of a murdered victim want ANYONE convicted for it, even if it is the WRONG person!
In the past I have been called online (wrongly), a “bastard”, a “liar”, a “misogynist”, a “little git”, and (accurately), a “troublemaker”, a “nuisance”, “irritating”, as well as “annoying”, but this pales into insignificance with what is happening in Argentina.
I haven’t yet been described as “HUMAN SHIT”, but it’s only a matter of time…

Tomorrow – for him establishing the correct identity of individuals has always been essential, but today this is made more difficult by fake pictures and films being created using Artificial Intelligence (AI), and the waters being muddied by onlookers spotting the comic potential of high-profile figures looking like others!
